How To Build Web Sites Tutorial (in plain english)

Domain Internet Registration
Most free web hosting services will only allow you to have as a domain name, a file as part of their own URL, example http://www.freeweb/yoursitename.com.. Some will give you a subdomain of their URL, example http://yoursitename.freeweb.com. (not actual sites) Some do allow you your own domain name, but you must register it with them. This may cost $35, way above the current rate for a .com, which is around $8 - $10 US. Some of the paid web hosting services include domain registration with their shared hosting plans.
Free Web Hosting
There can be hidden costs associated with free web hosting services. Some charge a fee for extras that are automatically included in paid shared hosting packages, so you could end up paying more. Consider that these web hosting services pay for the bandwidth your site will use, so they must make money somehow to recoup their losses.
There may be popups or banners appearing on your site, and there will be limitations on what you can do, including bandwidth, number of emails, technical support, autoresponders, methods of uploading, CGI support for forms etc. There will also be limited, or no, technical support.
As with paid web hosting, it is a good idea to work out exactly what you need for and from your web site, then make up a spreadsheet with those needs on it. Then find out from the different web hosts exactly how much they charge for what, plus which features they do not support. You may be surprised at the result and decide that low cost paid hosting is an affordable alternative, especially if most of the other tools, resources and programs are readily available for free.. You may decide that free hosting is exactly what you need.

Limitations
Free web sites are great for personal web pages, but not so for businesses who need a professional web site, with all the facilities and features that entails.
They cannot be search engine optimized fully, and there are the limitations imposed by free web hosts including your internet domain name.
The best option for businesses on a budget is to spend money on a good web host and registering their own domain name, then use the many free tools and resources in Web Tools to build their site.
Free Personal Web Page
Try your ISP first, many of them allow you to make your own free web page using their free web page builder, and will then host it for you. If your ISP does not provide this, consider changing to one that does, or use the resources on this page.
You can set up a free web site at Google, like this simple web page I created at http://margocourtney.googlepages.com/home.
You’ll need a gmail account and a mobile phone number to receive the access code. The URL subdomain of the page will be the name in front of the @part of the email address - in my case, I used margocourtney. Your choice will be limited by the gmail addresses available.
There are several designs and layputs to choose from, and no technical knowledge is needed. Very simple, very quick.
The limitation here of course, is that this is a subdomain of google, and not your own URL. Many directories and search engines will accept this as an address if you want to market the site (some will only accept a unique domain name).
