STEP 5           HOW TO DESIGN AN EASY WEB SITE

When you learn to design a web site and follow these steps, you will have a much higher chance of web page success.

Jumping in and building the site without designing it first will lead to frustration and many extra hours of work, undoing and redoing. Organisation is the key here.

Web Site Design is the development stage.
Creating a Web Site is the actual building or making.

Web Site Design consists of 3 parts :

Important – also read What Turns Visitors Off a Web Site – Bad Design Elements

Before you start….

Read all the steps in this Design section, then go and have a look at some websites. Analyze their components and elements for what you like and dislike about them. Look beyond the surface to see exactly what they’ve done to create their sites.

Look at :

  • Layout – the number of columns, where the different elements are placed
  • Space and shape – blank spaces, alignment of objects, page lengths and widths
  • Colours – how many, how they are used
  • Different effects – 3D, animations, scrolling text bars
  • Fonts – type and size
  • Clearly legible – Is the information easy to read and understand, at a glance?
  • Navigation Bar – positioning, the page names
  • Use of Borders, Lines and Shading – how have they separated the different parts of a page, and accented features?
  • Site Flow – is it easy to navigate without getting lost?
  • Site Map – examine the structure of how the site is organised
  • Forms – try out the forms to see the action pages that result, from both successfully submitting a form, and from deliberately missing filling out a required field.
  • Loading – how long does it take? If a long time, were there a lot of images on the page?
  • Notice anything else that you either like or dislike about the site
